This carved Egungun stick stands about 36 inches tall, with two faces at the top and a snake wrapped around the staff. It's a striking piece made for honoring the ancestors.
What is an Egungun stick?
In Lucumí and Yoruba tradition, Egungun (eggun) are the spirits of the ancestors. Before the Orishas, the ancestors are honored first. A staff for Egungun is used at the ancestor shrine, often tapped on the ground when calling and saluting the dead.
What do the carvings mean?
- Two faces: often read as looking at both worlds, the living and the ancestors.
- The snake: a common symbol of continuity, protection and the connection between generations.
- Carved wood: each staff has its own grain and small differences.
How the staff is consecrated and used is up to your godparent or your house.
