A piedra de rayo, or thunderstone, is the stone of Changó, the Orisha of thunder, lightning and fire. This piece measures about 6 inches and is a powerful addition to any altar dedicated to the king of the Orishas.
What is a piedra de rayo?
A piedra de rayo is a stone traditionally believed to be born where lightning strikes the earth. Because lightning belongs to Changó, the thunderstone is considered one of his most sacred objects and a carrier of his power.
How is it used?
- On Changó's altar: many devotees place the thunderstone near Changó's batea, pilón or image to honor his strength.
- In his batea: in some houses a piedra de rayo is kept with Changó's otanes. This is decided by the priest, not the devotee.
- For protection and justice: people who work with Changó keep it close when they're asking for strength, victory or justice.
Anything placed with Changó's fundamento should be done under the direction of your godparent or an olorisha.
