In Santería (La Regla de Ocha), Yemayá is one of the most important and widely venerated Orishas.

Who Yemayá Is

Orisha of the ocean — especially the surface of the sea.

Divine mother figure — considered the Mother of all Orishas and symbol of creation, fertility, and nurturing.

Protector of women, mothers, children, sailors, and families.

Her name comes from the Yoruba phrase “Yeyé omo eja,” meaning “Mother whose children are fish.”

Attributes and Symbols

Colors: Blue and white (often representing the sea and waves)

Numbers: 7 (connected to the seven seas)

Offerings: Watermelon, molasses, white flowers, seashells, and cool water

Animals: Fish and peacocks (in some traditions)
