Smoked jutía, or jutía ahumada, is one of the classic ingredients that practitioners keep on hand for the Warriors. Each order is one pound of smoked jutía, ready for your offerings.
What is jutía used for in Santería?
Jutía is a small Cuban rodent, and once smoked it becomes one of the traditional offerings for Elegguá, Ogún and Ochosi, the Orishas known as the Warriors (Los Guerreros). It's used together with smoked fish, toasted corn and palm oil, a combination many people learn as one of the first things they offer once they receive their Warriors.
How is it usually offered?
-
With the Warriors: smoked jutía and smoked fish (jutía y pescado) are the base of many offerings to Elegguá, Ogún and Ochosi.
-
With other ingredients: it's often prepared together with palm oil (epó), toasted corn and other traditional items.
-
In ceremonies: houses use it in preparations for initiations and other religious work.
How much to use and how to present it depends on your house, so follow what your godparent or olorisha teaches you.
