In Santería (La Regla de Ocha), Orunmila—also spelled Orúnmila, Orúla, or Orula—is one of the most important Orishas.
Who Is Orunmila?
Orunmila is the Orisha of wisdom, divination, and destiny. He is considered the witness to creation and the only Orisha who was present when Olodumare (God) created the universe. Because of this, he is the keeper of all knowledge about human fate and the spiritual forces that influence life.
Role in Santería
Master of Ifá: Orunmila governs the divination system known as Ifá, which uses the okpele chain or ikin (palm nuts).
Advisor of Destiny: He reveals a person’s life path, challenges, taboos, and how to stay aligned with their destiny.
Orisha of Wisdom: He is the protector of those who seek knowledge, clarity, and good decision-making
