Some sacred objects don't just hold things. They hold power. The batea de Changó is one of the most recognizable pieces in Santería, and this one is carved from wood, about 12 by 12 by 4 inches, ready to hold the otanes and tools of the thundering king.

What is a batea de Changó?

In La Regla de Ocha, Changó's fundamento is traditionally kept in a wooden batea, not a porcelain tureen, which sets him apart from most other Orishas. The batea is the throne of the king. Placing his otanes and oshe inside it recognizes that Changó reigns, that his justice is real, and that his aché lives in your home.

Who is Changó?

Changó (Shango) is the Orisha of thunder, lightning, fire, drumming, dance and justice. Tradition remembers him as a king of Oyo who was deified after his death, and he's still honored as a king today. His colors are red and white, his tool is the double headed axe called the oshe, and in Cuban tradition he's syncretized with Santa Bárbara, whose feast is December 4.

What is this batea used for?

  • Housing Changó's fundamento: his otanes, oshe and sacred tools.
  • Tronos and altars: dressed in his colors, red and white.
  • Ceremonies: initiations, tambores and his feast on December 4.
  • Offerings: presenting amalá, plantains and other foods he loves.

Why buy it from El Viejo Lázaro?

We've supplied carved pieces for Changó to Miami's Lucumí community since 2003. Set this batea on a pilón de Changó, or choose a matched pilón and batea set. Solid, carved and ready for the king.
