Every Yemayá altar starts with her sopera. This Orisha tureen measures about 12 x 18 inches, a generous size for holding Yemayá's otanes and sacred objects with the dignity the Mother of the Sea deserves.
What is a sopera de Yemayá?
A sopera is the lidded tureen where an Orisha's fundamento lives. For Yemayá, the Orisha of the ocean, motherhood and protection, the sopera holds her consecrated stones and the objects that represent her. It sits at the center of her altar.
Who is this sopera for?
- Iyawós and new initiates receiving Yemayá who need a sopera for her.
- Olorishas replacing or upgrading an existing tureen.
- Godparents preparing for a Kariocha ceremony.
Your godparent will tell you what size and style your Yemayá needs, so it's worth checking with them before you order.
Caring for your sopera
Keep the sopera on a stable surface, clean the outside gently with a soft cloth, and avoid harsh cleaners. Handle the lid carefully when you open it for offerings.
Why buy it from El Viejo Lázaro?
Soperas are one of our specialties. Our Miami botanica has been outfitting olorishas and religious houses since 2003, and we pack every tureen carefully so it arrives safely anywhere in the United States.
