The jícara is the simple gourd bowl you'll find on almost every Santería altar. This small jícara is the right size for offering water, drinks and food to the Orishas, or for holding ingredients during a ceremony.
What is a jícara?
A jícara is a bowl made from the dried shell of a gourd. It's one of the oldest and most traditional vessels in Afro Cuban practice, used because it comes straight from nature, the way the Orishas prefer their offerings.
How is a jícara used?
- Offerings: fresh water, drinks, honey or food are offered to the Orishas in a jícara.
- Ceremony: it holds herbs, omiero and other ingredients during rituals.
- Everyday altar work: many people keep several jícaras on hand for daily offerings.
Your godparent will tell you what your Orishas should receive and how often.
