This large sopera is made to be Obatalá's home, where his otanes and fundamento live. At about 12 by 20 inches it's one of the bigger soperas we carry, a good choice if you want a commanding piece on your shelf or are replacing an older tureen.
Why does Obatalá need a sopera?
Obatalá is the father of the Orishas, owner of all heads, peace and clarity. In Lucumí practice his sacred stones are kept inside a covered sopera, which is placed high in the house out of respect. Obatalá is associated with white and cleanliness, so his sopera is kept spotless.
What size is it?
This sopera measures approximately 12 by 20 inches. Check the space on your shelf or canastillero before ordering, and remember that Obatalá traditionally sits above the other Orishas.
Why buy your sopera from El Viejo Lázaro?
We've helped Miami's religious community set up their Orishas since 2003, under the guidance of Oba Oriate Nelson Hernández. If you're preparing for a Kariocha or replacing a sopera, you can visit our store at 5800 W Flagler St to see it in person, or order online and we'll pack it carefully for shipping.
