Light blue is the color of Yemayá's waters, and this large sopera carries it beautifully. At about 12 by 26 inches, it's one of our tallest soperas for her, a piece that stands out on any shelf or throne.
Who is Yemayá?
Yemayá is the mother of the Orishas and the owner of the sea, especially its surface and waves. She protects mothers, children, families and sailors. Her name comes from the Yoruba "Yeyé omo eja," mother whose children are fish. Her colors are blue and white, and her number is 7. In Cuban tradition she's syncretized with the Virgen de Regla.
Why does Yemayá need a sopera?
In Lucumí practice Yemayá's otanes and fundamento are kept inside a covered sopera. A large, tall piece like this one gives her plenty of room, which many houses prefer for an Orisha as vast as the ocean.
What size is it?
About 12 by 26 inches. Measure your shelf or canastillero before ordering, since this is a tall piece.
Why buy your sopera from El Viejo Lázaro?
We've helped Miami practitioners set up their Orishas since 2003, guided by Oba Oriate Nelson Hernández. See it in person at 5800 W Flagler St, or order online and we'll pack it carefully. You'll also find our other soperas de Yemayá and a Virgen de Regla statue.
