Alum stone, known in Spanish as piedra alumbre, is a clear crystal mineral that's been a botanica staple for generations. It's sold by the pound.
What is alum stone used for spiritually?
Its Spanish name comes from alumbrar, "to light up," and that's how people use it: to bring light and clarity to the spirits and to the home. Alum stone is used to absorb negative energy, to protect against envy and the evil eye, and to keep a space clear.
How do people use it?
- In the home: a piece placed in a corner or behind the door to absorb heavy energy.
- At the bóveda: used to bring light to the spirits.
- In cleansings: dissolved in water for floor washes or baths.
When a piece cracks or changes, many people take it as a sign it has absorbed something and replace it. Your godparent or spiritual guide can tell you how they use it.
